British Dietetic Association Gluten Free Food on PrescriptionPolicy Statement Summary Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition and is one of the most common gastrointestinal conditions requiring dietetic support. If untreated, coeliac disease can lead to a higher risk of osteoporosis, small bowel cancer and infertility. A gluten‐free diet is the sole treatment for coeliac disease and many patients find this challenging. The provision of gluten‐free food on prescription plays an important role in supporting people with coeliac disease to adhere to a life‐long strict gluten‐free diet. The BDA believes that: Gluten‐free staple foods should be available on prescription as per ACBS to all people diagnosed with Coeliac Disease to support them in adhering to the strict gluten‐free diet. The Coeliac UK prescribing guide...should be used to promote a fair system for typical amounts of gluten free foods that should be prescribed for people with Coeliac Disease. However recommendations made by registered dietitians will be based on individual assessment, taking into account the individual’s clinical condition and needs.... www.bda.uk.com/policies/GlutenFreeFoodPrescription.pdf
