Following Pat (Beverley)'s post of 03/06/2013 about The Walrus and the Carpenter in Whitby, I emailed them to find out more about their operation. This is part of the reply I received.
We opened on 1st May. We are child friendly/dog friendly and have outdoor seating (weather permitting) and we keep a small seasonal menu using all local produce, traditional cakes and desserts, fresh juices that we press, soft drinks, loose leaf teas, and are fast being known as the best coffee in town! We work with a 100% gluten free environment inspired by the experience we had over the years eating out in different places where cross contamination and ignorance caused recurring symptoms and frankly utter exhaustion. We felt a personal need to offer a safe haven for those in this position, having an approach of opening the doors to our dinner table as we eat ourselves. My partner and chef here at the cafe has a severe case of Coeliac so we have applied the knowledge of this experience to the cafe with 3 years experimentation of cooking, baking and nutritional research. So far working out really well and is a great joy to see peoples faces when they find out the entire menu is safe! Equally those who don't have any intolerances compliment the food and are none the wiser.
We are open currently 10am-5pm, 6 days a week (closed either Mondays OR Tuesdays but please call ahead to know which day) and will be opening later into the evenings over the school summer holidays which begin 20th July, I would imagine from 10am-9pm (to be confirmed). We can be found on the corner of the marketplace, in a 300 year old building on the cobbles in a wonderful area full of bustle and energy and market life.
We don't have website yet but we do have a basic info site on Facebook found here: www.facebook.com/thewalrusandthecarpenterwhitby
