I want to mention the shop Unicorn in Chorlton, Manchester. It is primarily an organic vegetarian outlet, but lots of its products are marked Gluten Free. I have no connection with the shop at all, but if you live local to Manchester I think it's well worth a visit.

Trafford Centre
Posted by Jill Liverpool on 12/7/2005
I was in Manchester Trafford centre on Saturday night, and was spoilt for choice really, there's a Nando's, Est Est Est, La Tasca and a few Indian places. Chose La Tasca as it had been mentioned on here recently. Was very impressed, the menu was full of GF marked foods, and a lot of them vegetarian or fish dishes as well, so suited me down to the ground. Wasn't overpriced either bill came to £17 for two with soft drinks. Worked really well as we were in and out within 40mins to catch the next showing of Batman Begins.
We shared off the tapas menu veg paella, garlic mushrooms and sauteed potatoes covered in onion and red peppers (that I thoroughly recommend). We had our our protein dishes, I had king prawns, my friend had non GF chorizo.
Found their menu:-

There is a La Tasca which states "gf" on the menu next to suitable food.
Alternatively there is Tampopo which is a similar concept to Wagamamas. You can have red or green thai curry, prawn crackers (avoid the dipping sauce) or a chicken and noodle soup. There are 5 suitable desserts including ginger creme brule and bananas in coconut cream. Just ask to see the allergy advice sheet on arrival. Certainly no need to go hungry at the Trafford Centre.

They were really good with Abbie. They always have gf pasta in but they had a completely clean fryer and she had melon for starters with chicken and chips for main and choc ice cream for afters. They were very clued up and did not have to worry about her at all. I read about this restaurant on supplement board so thank you. Hubby had a lovely surprise!!

I have been notified this evening of a local chip shop serving gluten and wheat free fish, chips & peas.
The shop is "Whittakers" in Urmston. I have tried it out this evening - £3.80 for fish, chips & peas. Not bad at all and for those who don't want to reheat it at home they have a cafe inside.
As an extra bonus, they don't only cook gf / wf every so often or need advance notice - you just go in like everybody else.
I believe they are open lunch times and evenings

Just to let you know I attended meeting today at the Manchester Cathedral Visitor's Centre. A colleague had requested a GF lunch on my behalf, but as you know it doesn't always arrive!
What a lovely surprise - I could eat anything on the buffet apart from the quiche, and was even asked if I would like some GF bread if they had any. As they didn't have the bread I had a jacket potato instead.
The dessert was a lovely meringue filled with cream and fruit - and a separate fruit salad.
The Manager told me he was also a coeliac so I knew I could trust them. What a result!

Had another weekend with Hannah at Pontins and they looked after her very well. Some of the chefs were the same as in October and they do seem well informed about GF. She had GF pasta for lunch and fish in GF batter for dinner. There was GF bread for breakfast and even a sponge pudding.
Apparently they have quite a few coeliacs staying on themed weekends. It's good that places like that have taken catering for special diets on board.
Not so lucky with Frankie and benny's where the group we were with went for lunch. They couldn't offer anything so we went back to Pontins instead. Not impressed with that.

Eating in Manchester
Posted by Ric on 4/7/2006 GF board
....if eating out in Manchester:
Lunch
Try Pret (gf items listed on website or ask manager for list), Caffe Nero (gluten free brownie next to tills, marked gf), Starbucks in St Ann's square (sometimes stock the gf sandwich and always gf cake(s)), La Tasca (menus marked gf) or either of the two Wagamamas (see website for gf dishes). For a refined lunch try Le Petit Blanc (now Brasserie Blanc - gf menu). There is also a Nandos which we have never tried but people on here have done. Obviously the usual McDonalds fries apply! All in all never a need to be short of options in Manchester City Centre at Lunch.
Evening Meal
Night time options include the usual suspects (Le Petit Blanc, La Tasca, Wagamamas) but Livebait and particularly the Harvey Nics restaurant are helpful. If heading into Rusholme ("the curry mile") I would recommend Punjab Tandori - their poppudums and the mango chutney are gf. Ask for the duty manager (as opposed to any old staff) to ascertain which dishes are gf -but I can confirm the excellent Dopiaz and Rogan Josh dishes are.
Hope the above is useful to anyone visiting Manchester.Lyn G

Its was pretty good- most of the GF stuff was similar to the usual menu so I didnt feel like too much of an outcast with a 'special menu'.
I had a med fish soup- which was a bit dull but ok. Guinea Fowl which was lush and then a strawberry sorbet/soup for pud.
Service was a bit slow and the atmosphere was not all that relaxing but overall ok.....

Just found a fantastic restaurant in Manchester, next door to Kendals, called Bem Brazil. It's Brazilian food with fantastic salads, soups, potatatoe dishes and as much meat as you can eat from rump to chicken, all carved at your table. The decor looks expensive but lunch is just 12.50 per adult and kids eat free. They even had gluten free bread balls with cheese in the middle, tasted just like french bread with cheese. I was in my element couldn't stop eating, the food is fantastic. This is now my favourite gluten friendly restaurant, up there with Table Ten in Sale and Franks in Altrincham. Gluten Free living is getting so much easier.

- Little Yang Sing in manchester- was a party of 30, had a banquet and all but one of the four mains were GF, had to have soup instead of the dim sum, but got lettuce leaves for the crispy duck- waitress even stopped me eating one the only non-GF dish as it had soy sauce in and i didn't realise. being GF no probs at all for the staff.
These experieences made me realise that GF is not really the end of eating out after all!

I went to AJ's Bistro on Topping St in Feb when i was visiting the in-laws and had a lovely meal. They made sure everything was GF & LF for me and made me up a fresh fruit salad as there wasn't many puddings to choose from. Just let them know your dietary requirements when you book.

Pontins Blackpool

Le Petit Blanc

... had a meal here not so long ago.

Fantastic Restuarants in Manchester and Cheshire

We went to Pond Quay (Chinese) at The Lowry, Manchester last night. Well worth a visit! It's the first time in 4 years since we've eaten Chinese and it didn't disappoint. They have a gluten free menu - a la carte and also a set menu. Hubby (he's the coeliac) really enjoyed it. It was his favourite before diagnosis and we will definately be going back!

…had a meal at this restaurant …
It was the first chinese meal that I had had for 20 years and I was very impressed. We were booked in late in the evening and had the restaurant all to ourselves. The service was excellent and we will definitely go back there should we ever find ourselves in Manchester again.
