test results question
Posted by Megan on 30/11/2011
I went to a celiac screening clinic to be tested after my brother was diagnosed and just got my results back. i was on a gluten diet when tested. the test they gave was the anti-human tissue transglutaminase IgA ELISA which supposedly has a reference range of <10.3u/ml. My results were 20.5 u/ml which the paper that comes with it suggests is positive. I'm going to take the paperwork to my doctor when i can get an appointment but it will probably be weeks before I can get in. my question is how high is that? is 20 a "low positive" or a super "high positive?" what sort of other result numbers did you guys get?? thanks!

Lowish but very likely to be a 'true' positive with your family history. You should ask for the endoscopy/biopsy to be done soon so that you can start the diet. It's best to stay eating gluten until then so that the dx can be confirmed and there is an accurate picture of gut damage before dietary treatment. Then if you need a biopsy in the future it can be compared.
If you stop eating gluten before the endoscopy (which could be at least 2 months away) the results could be construed as 'inconclusive' given your relatively low tTG and it MAY be harder to get prescription foods etc. If gluten is making you very ill this is a reason to push for an early biopsy.
Hopefully your test result suggests the disease is caught at a fairly early stage.
From Gail:
I am not sure but when diagnosed I was 29, which was high. But they doctor was vague and to be honest I could not understand him?? but I did get the figure

I believe mine was over 300, with complete villous atrophy, so hopefully 20 may mean you have very minimal damage if at all!
