Philippines. Posted by jill steaton on 1/3/2003, 8:35 am
Just come back from 2 weeks in the Philippines where I had to go for. It is really not at all easy to find food suitable for a coeliac - particularly if you are also vegetarian like me. Soy sauce is put in virtually everything and as a lot of places cool stuff in advance it is very difficult to ask them to cook without. Even those who cook fresh I suspect although able to leave the soy sauce out so not understand the issue of contamination and I am sure do not clean pans in between cooking food with soy sauce and something for you! I had to take this risk though or starve! Luckily I dont think i am that sensitive and in such situations you haqve to eat something. There are loads of pizza, pasta, fast food restuarants etc but again soemthing without wheat? Moral: if you have to go to the Philippines then take plenty of own food - rice cakes can be found with difficulty in Manila - and be prepared for eating alot of plain rice! May not be the best choice for a holiday unless this really is a dream destination
