Yes I'm diabetic with coeliac disease & I don't pay for prescriptions which isn't fair I think Coeliacs shouldn't have to pay either

Yes, diabetics get free scripts.
But, (there has to be one), depends on the policy of each GP as to whether they prescribe testing strips. Mine doesnt.
I need the strips to understand the effects of diet etc...and how I can best manage the two diet/lifestyles together. Test alternate days only now, or if I feel ill....
So I can buy at Boots etc at £28.50 a box of 50. Or ebay (sorry) where I can bid/buy at maybe £14.50 a box...for items which have clearly been prescribed....This is clearly a Halle Orchestra job (plenty of fiddles). Yes Ebay know about it. No they wont stop it. Breaks several ebay rules...
I certainly know about it big time if I dont stick rigidly to the Diabetic life style. Just dont get me started on the effects of the Metformin...(its a diabetics joke).

people with diabetes only get free prescriptions if they are on medication for the condition. If they manage their diabetes through diet and exercise alone they do not qualify and there is no reason why their food woudl cost any more than the average person (unlike people with coeliac) as so called diabetic foods are not seen as a good addition to the diet and in fact they are advised to avoid them

They should, however, be prescribed test strips, whether they get free prescriptions or not!

My GP doesnt prescribe the test strips. Hence I sought my own supplies.
So how do you suggest I test my bloods without the strips? I am still learning about the condition...and how to manage it.
Failure to manage securely, could result in things far worse than CD....ie when I am driving...
This is a similar situation to the various protocols the PCTs are introducing....not all PCTs and GPs have the same sets of rules...

that is a completly different issue. Indeed people who need test strips and are educated to use them appropriately to manage their diabetes should be prescribed them. However, not everyone with Type 2 diabetes will require them or want them. It is always about looking at the individual, their lifestyle, what they want to achieve etc. No blanket rules
