GF board
....we have a place near torrevieja, near Playa Flamenca. There is a food shop there (on main road) called Supercor, it's part of El Corte Ingles, and its a bit like an M&S food shop, ie not cheap but they have LOADS of GF stuff, the beer is particularly good, and there is a lot of Procelli goods, like croissants, cakes, pasta etc.....

Spain Posted by Diane on 3/9/2006 GF board
Just returned from Terrevieja in Spain with GF daughter and had a mixed response to our requests for GF food in restaurants. Most of the Spanish restaurants were very helpful, the waiter normally took our translation card to the chef and then came back and told us what was ok. In one restaurant the waiter didn't speak any english so tried to draw for us what she could have. After much hilarity we went with his suggestion (his only English was no chips - which was obviously due to cross contamination) - she ended up with a grilled chicken fillet with herbs, a really nice salad and some potatoes which they had fried separately for her. Our worst experience was in an Irish bar where the waitress just shruggerd her shoulders and offered no advise or interest - another restaurant (in Murcia) offered her a sandwich!!!!! We did find some gluten free food in the local supermarket but not as much as we had expected to find.

Best to stay away from Irish and English places abroad, they're often more ignorant than traditional places. As for the supermarkets, it depends which one you go to. Mercadonna and Ahorra Mas are two of the best (The CEO of Mercadonna is also GF). Also remember that processd foods aren't as usual in Spain as in the UK. Ready Meals - forget it!!
