Costa Blanca
Posted by Kate on 11/9/2005
Hi Carol I notice you are going to Spain; I have just returned from my first holiday there since being GF - I don't know where abouts you are going, but in the Costa Blanca the supermarkets were better than here! There is a chain called Mercadona which labels EVERYTHING, its own brand is called Procelli I believe, and even the ice cream was labelled, great. Also, there is another chain called Supercor. This is owned by Cortes Ingles, so is similar to our House of Frazer. The shops are not cheap but lots of lovely GF stuff - even beer, and chocolate cake! Eating out was more of a problem for me because I'm veggie aswell - if I wasn't you'd be fine.We stuck to the more touristy places, such as an english owned mexican, which was great. ...

Re: Going Abroad Posted by Kate on 11/9/2005
....we have a holiday home about 15 minutes up the road from Mil Palmeras, Costa Blanca and this summer was our first visit since my being CD (and also a veggie!), I was a little apprehensive, and also completely forgot all my prescription stuff - pizza bases, pasta, bread etc - doh! But fear not - Mercadona Supermarket labelling is very good, and there is a Supercor in Playa Flamenca (about 10 miles from Mil Palmeras) which is equivalent to a House of Frazer food hall - loads of stuff, all the above, plus beer! We found Mil Palmeras, whilst a lovely town and a nice atmosphere, not too good for a GF veggie. In Cabo Roig where we were, there was a good Mexican ..... and of course lots of Indians. ..........
...........My Spanish is not too bad, and I had the correct phrases typed up, but being a holiday area for many nationalities, the staff are sometimes neither spanish nor english - the waitress we had in the restaurant in MP didn't have a clue what I was talking about so I had a SPanish Omlette.......

Costa Blanca - useful g-f info Posted by Mary H on 3/3/2007 GF board
Just wondered if this information would be helpful for anyone visiting Spain, and in particular the Costa Blanca. We have a property in La Nucia, which is just north and inland a bit from Benidorm, so I've become used to looking for gluten-free food in the area. I've found the best place to buy gluten-free food is in the supermarket chain called Mercadona. I usually shop at the Mercadona on the road to La Nucia from Benidorm (not the one in La Nucia itself). They have Proceli part-baked baguettes (yummy) and Proceli 'pan de molde' (sliced English-style bread - OK as toast) in their normal bread aisle. They also have gluten-free biscuits in their own brand range called Hacendado - plain 'Maria' biscuits and also choc chip biscuits. On my most recent visit last month I discovered that they had also introduced Dietary Specials cornflakes into their normal breakfast cereal section!
There is also a huge Carrefour hypermarket just outside Benidorm in La Cala. I find it fairly poorly stocked for gluten-free food, BUT they do stock gluten-free lager! The brand is 'Estrella Damm' and there is a normal version and a gluten-free version. The g-f version is clearly labelled 'apto por celiacos'.
Hope this info is helpful for anyone visiting the area.
Mary
