Most Spanish restaurants don't know about coeliac disease or gluten so "sin pan, sin harina" is the more useful than "sin gluten" or “celiaca”. However most Spanish food is prepared freshly on the premises (unlike the UK) and not full of fancy sauces (unlike France) so in lots of ways it's easier and people in small restaurants are usually helpful. Start with: “No puedo comer trigo, cebada, centeno, avena” ( I can’t eat wheat barley, rye, oats) and then before they start to panic make it clear what you CAN eat:
"Puedo comar..." (I can eat..) or "Puedo tomar..." (I can have...) "carne, pescado, huevos, arroz, patatas, maíz, leche, queso, fruta, verduras, ensalada, aceite, tuercas, azúcar” (meat, fish, eggs, rice, potatoes, maize, milk, cheese, fruit, veg, salad, oil, nuts, sugar etc) “a la plancha” (plainly grilled) or “asado, frito, hervido, asado…” (grilled, fried, boiled, roasted) “sin harina” (without flour) or "sin salsa" (without sauce) or “sin espesamiento” (without thickening).
Puddings will be more difficult. “Harina de maíz” (cornflour) is used for some things like the ubiquitous pudding “flan” (crème caramel) but you need to check they have not used “harina de trigo” (wheatflour). Go early (not difficult since the Spanish eat lunch and dinner so late!), be charming, say it in Spanish and there will be no problem (in fact although they will think you a lot less odd than a vegetarian!). The Spanish are used to customers being very assertive about food. I always cringe when I hear my Spanish friend asking “But is this fish really fresh? Is this the best steak you have?” but apparently it’s normal, so asking what’s in the sauce is not considered a personal affront (as it might be in France).(Incidentally unless you're eating somewhere very trendy - and there are some fantastic new cuisine type places esp in Catalonia - I wouldn't confuse them with requests for meals with millet or buckwheat flour).
Shopping Tips: There are usually GF products in health food shops called HERBOLARIOS. In big cities you can also buy GF products (including a very good range of Proceli foods) in the department store "El Corte Ingles." ...

Off to Menorca Posted by Sally (Cumbria) on 3/5/2009 GF board We were on the island of menorca last summer with our daughter (with CD) who was 3 at the time. If you can get in to Mahon (bus takes you right in to town centre) about a 2 minute walk from the bus station there is a bakers type shop called I think Maxipia (sp?) who sell GF breads/breadsticks and further along there is a delicatessan type shop where we found really scrummy GF biscuits. Best bet for restaurants is take a dietary card but there is a great website set up (I think) by Menorcans and its really informative (I have tried to post link below) which you can ask questions of people who live there and also who have travelled there. You do need to register but you will find special sections of special diets/children/places to visit etc some of it is a little dated by a year. We found Menorca great, we were staying all inclusive in Saint luis and each night the maitre'd would bring my daughter out freshly cooked meat and then she had her choice of various foods on a buffet of which we had no problems. We took bread and crackers and of course her cereal but she had no problems eating. In Punta Prima although small there was a local 'spar' type shop which sold crisps, pom bears, walkers, yoghurts etc and enough fruit and veg to sink a battle ship. They also had things like waffles which I remember checking were GF too. Also in mahon an eaterie called 'Bracafe' read my dietary translation sheet when we requested a ham omelette and chips for lauren and advised us not to have the chips. I took bread cereal and pasta with us We had a fab time my daughter did'nt miss out at all *************

Following my trip to Menorca thought I would post a quick message to congratulate the Menorcans on how aware of CD they are. El Pato restaurant in Cala n' Bosch have a dedicated GF menu with choices of Pizza and Pasta and they also have GF beer. Most other restaurants in Cala n' Bosch were aware of what CD was. In most supermarkets even the smaller ones they have a special dietary section, the brand which seems to be popular was Gullon. I tried their biscuits and chocolate covered rice cakes. Saw GF bread in Mahon in the "herbalist" store in the indoor market along with GF muesli, cornflakes and muffins. Saw GF bread in Arenal in the Spar supermarket.
And of course wonderful seafood paella and sangria. Well done to the Spanish!

Posted by Sally (London) on 8/9/2012, 10:56:29 It was fabulous in Menorca that so much is clearly labelled 'sin gluten', sausages, burgers, crisps, even the ice cream boards outside shops. Our local resort supermarket could bake us fresh bread that they had frozen and sealed in packets that went straight into the oven, so no contamination. Most of the restaurants we asked seemed clued up on 'coeliaco' and seemed to know about cross contamination when asked. We were delighted to find that 5 minutes walk from our apartment, a restaurant had this outside!
