Posted by sian Northwales in Tshirt. on 26/1/2004, 11:40 am GF Board Update on Madeira. Stayed at the Porto Santa Maria in the old town on the sea front. Good selection for breakfast, fresh fruit, yogurt, full English breakfast and cold meats etc. I took my own bread (bought at the bakery Fabrica Santo Antonio)-they also sell lovely gluten free biscuits of different flavours, so I have stocked up! O Jango restaurant behind the hotel were very helpful and they have a wonderful tomato, onion and poached egg soup which is gluten free and also a lovely fish stew. Tapassol restaurant, also behind the hotel were very helpful and as I fancied pasta that night they cooked my supplied one wuth a lovely sauce. (Be warned I took a 500g packet and they cooked half of it! I failed to get through it!) Back on Air2000 now (with thermals on) so Pot Noodle to the ready and a sarni. *************************************** Porto Santa Maria Hotel, Funchal www.atlanticholidays.net/hotelsmadeira/MHPM.html ***************************************** Tapassol Rua D. I'm currently living in Madeira, and have eventually found my gf food! It took a while! SA supermarket is the best place to go, and has its own shelf (at the end of the fruit&veg section) where you can buy biscuits, crackers, lasagne, etc. Pasta is hidden in the next aisle with the bio foods!
It is impossible to buy bread anywhere except the bakers previously mentioned-Fabio s.to Antonio, Tavessa do Forno 27 29, Funchal, Tel no. 291 220 255. (Its near Mango clothes shop). The bread is gorgeous and 95cents per loaf - they are tiny! The owner is happy to take orders and has them ready for you to collect.
I am told the Royal Savoy Hotel in Funchal caters especially well for gf.
Oh yeah, and don't bother with the pharmacies. They dont cater for gf at all!
Madeira is an excellent place to shop if you are dairy free as well.

My partner is a coeliac and we have just come back from Madeira. Despite a lot of rain, we have had one of the best holiday ever in terms of guten free food. Although there were not many specific gf foods in the shops but plenty of good quality fresh meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, which are naturally gf. We were staying in Four Views Monumental Lido hotel in a self-catering appartment. We had only one lunch in that hotel in the pool bar on arrival (seafood kebab with potato and salad) and it was OK. Otherwise, we had either lunch out and dinner in or vice versa, depending on what we were doing. Every restaurant we went to, did not disappoint us. Staff was helpful and understanding and went out of their way to fulfill my partner's requirements. Most of the time we were ordering two gluten free dishes and share them in order to taste more Madeiran specialities. We even took a chance on a Chinese restaurant and spent a considerable amout of time to explain to them gf principles but it looked like they had understood as she was OK next day. One of our fave dishes was the 'Espada' with fried bananas. As most of you may know, the original version is not gf as they roll the fish filet in flower and egg. However, they were more than happy to grill the fish without flower instead. We do not normally eat a lot of red meat but this holiday was an exception. We indulged in 'Espetada' or 'Steak on the rock' and we loved it. We were quite surprised that the Indian restaurant staff asked if gluten is the issue, as soon as we mentioned about special dietary needs. On our second visit they offered to make special onion bhajis out of gram flower without the addition of wheat flower. Therefore, we think that Madeira is a coeliacs' paradise and we will definitely be back. madeira.fourviewshotels.com/index/cms/page/-/page/monumental_about_the_hotel/pageTitle/monumental/lang/en
