................................................................................................
From Vee:
Thank you for your enquiry about gluten-free foods in New Zealand. Please visit our website at
www.coeliac.co.nz
When you arrive in NZ, the Society has a 24 hour answer-phone, 09 820 5157 and you are most welcome to leave a message asking for help and information. These messages are usually cleared daily, but you must leave information on where you can be contacted for the next 3 days to be certain.
We have also included the names and telephone numbers for key contacts around the country. Each of these people will be able to help you with local GF-friendly shops and restaurants. You will also find a list of GF restaurants, bakeries, cafés and supermarkets where you can buy GF products.
If you plan to visit a supermarket you should try to go to the largest one in a city. WOOLWORTHS and NEW WORLD probably provide the best range of food.
When you are eating out at a restaurant, if you explain your condition, you should find the chef willing to serve you a suitable meal.
Most Coeliacs in New Zealand travel with a small store of gluten free staples, just in case. You are able to bring in processed food, but with NZ being an agricultural state, you MUST declare it for Customs. It is a good idea to have any food easily accessible in your luggage, so they can have a look.
You must also be aware that New Zealand has taken extreme measures to protect its borders since the foot and mouth crisis in Britain, so be prepared to be thoroughly checked. As you walk up to Customs you may observe sniffer dogs on duty – these dogs are part of the food checking system – and rather clever!
Under no circumstances are you permitted to bring in fruit, vegetables or meat products. If you are
found with these items when you have not declared them, you will receive an instant fine of $200. We thank you for any effort to keep NZ free of pests and disease.

COMMON GLUTEN FREE FOODS AVAILABLE IN NZ
Here is a list of the most common gluten-free foods available in New Zealand; We must however warn you that there is a wide variation in availability. For a more comprehensive list please visit Manufactured Food Database at www.mfd.co.nz
Breakfast Cereals
HEALTHERIES – Wheat and Gluten Free Muesli, Wheat & Gluten Free Hot Cereal. ORGRAN Muesli
HUBBARDS – Thank Goodness, Just the Bees Knees
WOOLWORTHS Supermarkets have a gluten-free muesli in their bulk bins, but it may not be available in all areas.
PORRIDGE: LOWAN Rice Porridge - they also make two cereals - Cocoa Bombs and Soy Flakes cereal with apricots and almonds. ORGRAN Rice Porridge
GLUTEN-FREE BREAD
Availability varies, but is improving all the time. DOVEDALE makes a fruit loaf, and also a Rice loaf. Probably the most widely found bread in NZ. Both are reasonably heavy breads. The benefit of this brand is that it has a long shelf life, and will not crumble, if you like this type of heavier bread. It would be possible to stock up with it at the beginning of your trip and use it as needed, it travels well [for 2 -3 weeks] as it has a heavy plastic wrapper. Store it carefully, [refrigerate if possible] as NZ has a humid climate in summer, and mould develops quickly.
SPOILT FOR CHOICE- in Auckland
WOOLWORTHS Supermarket make a basic white loaf - usually available several times a week.
NEW WORLD Supermarket, [especially in the South Island] makes its own bread.
Pasta
ORGRAN is the major supplier of gluten free pasta in NZ. They make a large range, which is increasingly available in supermarkets and major healthy food shops. The quality and nutritional value is excellent.
Biscuits and Snack bars
ARNOTTS Rice Cookies are available in many Supermarket Plain Biscuit sections - they are a very normal tasting tea biscuit.
RICE CAKES are readily available in Supermarkets - HEALTHERIES is the main label. Look for a similar product, Corn Thins by REAL FOODS. RICE CRACKERS are a thin rice cracker, also very popular and readily available in Supermarkets. Unfortunately a new brand contains wheat flour it so you must check the label when you purchase them.* FREEDOM FOODS, and NATURALLY GOOD make several varieties of biscuits - look for them particularly at WOOLWORTHS and NEW WORLD Supermarkets. Snack Bars are often gluten-free - look for these labels and then check the ingredients on the label- LITE BAR, SLIM and NATURAL, MAGIC MUESLI, KEA Biscuits are available in all leading Health Food Shops
Gluten free Flour
HEALTHERIES, BAKELS, HORLEYS, FREEDOM and COUNTRY HARVEST (Breadmix) are widely available in Health Food Shops and Supermarkets. ORGRAN has a one loaf pack of bread mix which is ideal for holiday makers.

Foods Free Of Gluten
The Manufactured Food Database (MFD) has been compiled by Nutrition Services, Auckland Hospital from information voluntarily supplied by New Zealand Food Manufacturers. The Manufactured Food Database is purchased by the Ministry of Health.
................................................................................................
