The chef at the Marsden Inn provided a lovely gf meal when we called in last week. He checked to see that the meal I had suggested ordering was suitable for me and altered it accordingly. I had not phoned up in advance.
Since then he has checked out the food in his kitchen to see what other choices I could make and has also contacted his supplier to ask them to use cornflour instead of wheatflour in ready cooked meals. It is brilliant when you know someone takes so much trouble to cater for you!
...............
The Inn is also residential and, at £24.50 for a double room, is excellent value. Each room has a washbasin but, as yet, no rooms have en suite.

...... i have eaten there on many occasions. i have just notice they now advertise on a blackboard in the restaurant that they cook gluten free food, which i thought was great to see.

I put the original link in four years ago and they are still going strong. In fact, I ate there today and the meal was superb.
...you travel towards the coast on the John Ried Road, through The Nook and the Inn is on the roundabout on the left hand side before you reach the coast.
Happy eating,
Vee

1st anniversary celebration was a disaster
Posted by tracy (co durham) on 18/6/2006
today is my 1st wedding anniversary. so to celebrate i arranged for 5 members of my immedaite family to join us (also as it was fathers day). we booked a table at the marsden inn (south shields, tyne and wear).
i was informed i could have a GF sunday lunch, which i quite fancied. when it arrived a noticed it had a y.pudding on the plate. i said ' ooh, a GF pud', to which the waitress replied ' yes'. i had just cut in to one roast potato when she ran to our table. she informed me that the Y.Pud was not G.F. she took away the meal and returned with a plate of food minus the Y.Pud. i then noticed the same roastie was on the plate. i told her this and she admitted to removing the Y.Pud. i informed her of cross contamination. she again took the meal away. a few moments later she returned with the same meal, and she stated it was freshly made. i checked the gravy was G.F which she stated it was. i begun to eat it but only had 2-3 mouthfuls and could not eat any more. i begun to panick as i have a severe reaction when i am glutened.
i refused a sweet. my mum and sister in law (who are not sillyaks) ordered a sweet and were given the wrong ones. only my mum complained and her was changed.
what a disaster. i was upset due to panicking. it spoilt the night. my father complained to the assist. manager, then he had to speak with the waitress and eventually the manager (who arrived after he had been contacted by his staff). neither of these people were aware of cross contamination and its effects on us sillyaks. i found this hard to understand as they advertise G.F food being sold in their restaurant.
the manager is due to send me a bouquet of flowers and also to send us vouchers for free meals. he is also going to read up on coeliac disease. he is going to speak with all of his staff. he has guaranteed that this situation will not be repeated.
it will probably take me a while to feel confident in going again.
i recently praised this restaurant on here a few weeks ago for them advertising g.f on their blackboard !!! also i have eaten their for approx two years without any problems.
