.....Some info on prednisone.....
www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/drug ... 01102.html
Two pieces of advice from the celiac listserv archives:
"As for prednisone, one piece of advice I would have is take it in the morning. It causes sleep disturbances, and I find that if I take it in the afternoon or evening, it keeps me awake... "
"If you're on prednisone long-term (more than 3 weeks or so), even at 2.5 mg/day, be sure to take extra calcium, btw."
Also a reminder to anyone who missed it of this study, with a comment from celiac.com:
Azathioprine and Prednisone Combination Therapy in Refractory Coeliac Disease
Celiac.com 11/18/2003 -
"This very important Dutch study demonstrates a new and effective way of treating a subgroup of refractory celiac disease patients, those with normal intraepithelial T-lymphocytes (IELs).
Considering the very poor outcome for those in the study with abnormal IELs (phenotypically immature intraepithelial T-lymphocytes defined by a lack of characteristic T-cell markers), we must hope that future research will soon yield an equally effective treatment"

Terry now on day 3 of steriods-what a difference!
First of all he's eating us out of house &home!Great to see him have such an appetite like NEVER before.
Within hours of taking them his throat was no longer sore,no problems swallowing for the first time in 10 months. Also his feet & ankles which were constantly swollen & purple have gone down & are normal colour.Shooting pains in head have stopped,& other neurological symptoms have disappeared(pain & tingling in feet, dizzyness, shuffling gait)
Most importantly, the fog has lifted!Although still physically tired, the crippling fatigue has lifted.
He's alert, chatty,& on top of the world at the moment(Lol!)
Only downside so far is difficulty getting to sleep-but he reckons it's worth it.
Bloomin marvellous to see him be able to move about easily, get out of his chair etc..
So far so good. What a shame they have such side effects!I've got my old partner back!!

They probably didn't want to try steroids before because they only use steroids if nothing else works and then only for a short a time as possible. Steroids were once though to be a wonder drug, but then it was realised that the long term effects of steroids were not all all good. I had steroids after my diagnosis with rheumatoid arthritis along with starting long term rheumatoid drugs, then tapered them off. With RA, there is some evidence that a low dose steroid given early on can help prevent permanent damage to the joints but long term steroids are to be avoid unless they are very small doses. I guess the specialist hopes that the steroids will give a kick start to the healing process. When the steroids kicked in it was wonderful and I could then walk and shower and get up and do the cooking again and normal activities again. It was like a miracle drug. Eventually the other long term RA meds began to work and over a period of time I reduce the steroids slowly. It is very important to reduce them slowly. At the moment I do not need steroids. Any inflammatory condition is usually greatly helped by steroids but not usually a long term solution....

GF board
....I posted a couple of weeks ago about being GF for almost three years but the endoscopy I had in February showed that I had not healed. Following more tests I was put on steroids two weeks ago. I cannot believe the difference it has made to me. My appetite has returned and for the first time in years I feel so much better. I used to get so much stomach pain, sickness and runs, and it has all stopped. Plus, a big bonus, I am putting on weight after having lost over two stone since being GF. I don't know how long I will be kept on the steroids but they have certainly given my body a kick-start .....
