Beware Northern Ireland coeliacs - important information.

GF board
Just to let you know that the local coffee shop chain Ground which has outlets in several NI towns, including in Waterstones In Belfast, is selling a gluten free traybake which allegedly is not adequately protected from cross contamination. The traybake is a coconut and chocolate one and is labelled as gluten free. I used to buy this as I found it was wrapped in sellophane. I subsequently found out that the outlets do the wrapping themselves, not the producer. I had recently noted that the items were on display without wrappers along with all the other gluten based stuff and asked about this, finding out who did the wrapping. I have now learned that the producers supplying one outlet told staff that as they were short of the number of gluten free traybakes and had added in 4 regular traybakes in the same batch to make up the number. I realised that there was apparantly no protection in place from cross contamination. This makes me wonder just how safe the production process is in the first place if the manufacturers are not aware of how to ensure that the products are GF. I will be addressing the matter with the owners of the chain to encourage them to continue to helpfully provide a GF option but also to ensure that the production and packaging processes are properly managed in future. Meantime all local coeliacs should take these concerns on board until they are resolved.
I like this chain and patronise it because it is locally owned and managed. I would be quite happy to help them in addressing how to safely manage to provide Gf products. The owners should realise that when they provide goods for coeliacs they will attract them as regular customers. Where the coeliac can eat he or she will go and so too will any family and friends in order that they can do. This multiplies significantly the potential customers as a result of offering GF products.
