Down in Winchester today for the Friends of King Alfred Running Day, we lunched at Debenhams and I was able to try out the legendary but never before encountered chicken tikka masala. It was good, and the service was good, and we enjoyed our meal. It should be said that this was the type of establishent where you have waitress service rather than queueing up to select your meal, and it's also the case that it's still nigh on impossible to find out what's on the menu until you actually order, but this was a positive experience! Gluten Free Meals.
Introduction. Coeliac Disease is a life-long condition in which the lining of the small intestine is damaged, which reduces the ability of the gut to absorb adequate nutrients. Gluten is a protein found in Wheat, but proteins found in Rye, Barley and Oats are similar and can affect a person with Coeliacs Disease.
The only treatment is a gluten-free diet, which must be strictly adhered to and continued for life if it is to be effective. Some Coeliacs are able to tolerate up to 50g of Oats.
The list below indicated foods that do not contain Gluten in the recipe (including oats, rye etc).
Please be aware that due to preparation methods there may be cross-contamination from foods that do contain Gluten. For example, when chips are cooked in the same oil as fish.

From Adrian on members2.boardhost.com/glutenfree/ (Gluten Free board) 17/06/03 Debenhams' restaurants Thought you might like to know, Debenhams' restaurants within their shops seem very Coeliac friendly. In each one they have a book labeling all their foods, including side orders and sauces stating if they contain gluten, or indeed lactose etc. They often have a gluten free Shepherd's pie and ricecrispy cakes, all labeled as gluten free on the price tag! We ate there the other week and made sure afterwards that we filled in a comments form to say well done and keep up the good work, if you don't let them know it's wanted places will get "bored" and stop helping.

Upon request to our staff, customers can check on any items which they feel may cause any problem with an allergy or specialist diet.
We are starting to train our staff on allergies and would assure you we make every effort to ensure the safety of our customers.

I haven't been for a while but Debenham's restaurants now have a booklet (on the wall opposite the place where you pick up a tray before selecting your snack/meal in my local Debenhams) which shows certain items that are suitable for special diets. You can check for combined diets (eg in my case find what is suitable for vegetarians AND is also GF). We only went for coffee so I chose the macaroon- very nice - but there were other items suitable for me. The kind assistant explained all this to me & said they also have a book like this behind the scenes but it is helpful to them when they are busy if people on special diets look up the special diet items themselves in the book on display.

Don't know if all Deb's are the same but mine does GF/WF individual Shepherds' Pie. Also the kids can go in and get a kids box fill it from stuff in the book and not look out of place, they love it. We can all go there for a lunch together and Jane can have her Fish and Chips or whatever and I don't have to have the normal Baked Spud or Salad.
