Dornoch Castle
Posted by Nicole on 2/1/2005
Hi all and happy New Year. I have just had a fabulous Hogmanay up at Dornoch Castle and wanted to tell you all about it. I thought it might be nice to hear that there are some hotels/restaurants out there who take CD very seriously and dont make you feel like a nuisance.
I had emailed and spoken to them about three times and they had assured me that they would cater for my CD. For two reasons (1. that I am now paranoid having had a lifetimes supply of feta cheese salad in the last three weeks and 2. because some GF bread etc is so awful) I took some bread and flour with me.
Stewart - their head chef has several friends with CD and suffers from serious food allergies himself so he made sure that I was catered for for all meals (including afternoon tea and a late night Hogmanay snack - smoked salmon no less).
I ate gourmet meals everyday and never felt like I was missing out.
Dornoch is a lovely town and their Hogmanay celebrations are fantastic. The Castle is an old Bishop's palace and is currently being refurbished so it is not overwhelmingly flash but the service, food and the whole experience was one we are heading back for next year (we have already booked).
It is the first holiday I have had for years where I didnt spend most of it in agony and exhausted in my hotel room. ...

Should have also said that the coffee shop across the road aptly called the Coffee Shop regularly has a GF cheese cake on their menu and (for those who can drink milk) also has the best choc milkshake I have ever tasted.
