(Edinburgh) Posted by davidmc on 6/11/2006 GF board .....It seems to me that there are loads of options in Edinburgh if you keep trying new places. I haven't been to them yet but La Favorita in Leith Walk does GF pizza options and probably GF pasta too as it is part of the Valvona and Crolla empire. I also rang Urban Angel in Hanover Street and the Blue bar Cafe in Cambridge St when I was visiting my son there last week and both say that they can cater for GF. Both are in the hitlist recommendations for the Glasgow and Edinburgh List -see link below. I am informed by the husband of the local group organiser for Edinburgh that most italian restaurants there can cater for GF. I reckon it would be easy to find scores of places for us to eat in the city and in time I hope to do so. ....I haven't tried Howies yet as my son didn't like the look of the menu -another time perhaps..... Link: www.list.co.uk/restaurants/index.php ******************** Indian in Edinburgh From devidmc on GF board Jan 2007 ....I checked out the recommendations in the book for indian restaurants for you. Roti at 70 Rose St gets a good review(it is more expensive than the others) as does The Original Khushis at 26 Potterow. Suruchi at 14a Nicolson St has loads for veggies and there is a Suruchi Too at Constitution St in Leith. Kalpna at St Patricks Sq is the original Edinburgh indian veggie restaurant. Kebab Mahal at 7 Nicolson Sq allegedly does great veg biryani and delicious lassi for under a fiver. Ann Purna at 45 St Patrick's Sq does excellent all vegetarian gujarati cuisine. ********* Re: GF Edinburgh Posted by davidmc on 22/3/2007 Gf board ... be sure to try First Coast in the West End - it was wonderful and inexpensive. best to book. I can't wait to go there again. Edinburgh is great for coeliacs. You can get a cooked breakfast in the top floor food hall in John Lewis. I haven't tried many but I have been told by local coeliacs that italian restaurants in Edinburgh are usually good for coelics. Vittorias was very good. Pizzas in Mamas in grassmarket are good and you can get more of the same but stonebaked in La Favorita in Leith Walk. ...... **************** Re: GF Edinburgh Posted by tictac on 22/3/2007 Gf board Behind Edinburgh Castle in a side street there is pitza place called Mamma Mias (I think) and they make gluten free pitza and serve gluten free beer. I would google Gluten Free pitza edinburgh because I got a map to get there as well. It was delicious. **************** Re: Edinburgh Posted by davidmc on 3/3/2008 GF board ... I have had a few nice meals in La Tasca but what I like about Edinburgh is that there are so many places to eat GF. ... try First Coast on Dalry Road, Always Sunday on High St or Blue in the Traverse Theatre building.... ***************** --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Posted by Vee Durham on 24/11/2008, 17:12:18 88.110.225.X We had a good time in Edinburgh at the weekend. I wasn't poisoned! 1. Milnes Bar Rose Street (not my choice of venue but friends wanted to go there) I had a Jacket Potato and a little bit of salad. They made the effort, that's all I can say! 4/10 2. Cafe Rouge Frederick Street. Pleasant three-course meal but some choices were off the menu. They don't have a chef on the premises and all food is pre-packed. I'd only give it 4/10 3. The Castle I hadn't realised they probably did more gf food but it was a delight to have a choice of snacks. Home-made meringe or gorgeous, juicy carrot cake. 10/10 4. Ryans Bar, Hope Street. An excellent meal and a great find! The a la carte menu was great, staff knowledgeable and venue (downstairs in the cellar) delightful. 11/10 oops! www.caley-heritable.co.uk/contactus.htm 5. Bella Italia, corner of North Bridge and The Royal Mile. Although I had to eat what was recommended (a mix of dishes, really), it was delicious. Score 8/10 www.bellaitalia.co.uk/locations.php 6. Holiday Inn Express, opposite the Playhouse on Leith Road? Despite it being classed as Continental Breakfast, there was plenty for me to eat - fruit, yogurt, cheeses and I had taken my own bread. I didn't bother to toast it although the toasters could have been used with the toasta bags I had. I asked for bananas (which they don't usually have) so they offered to get some for me for Sunday as well as gf bread if I wanted it!! I was gobsmacked as I hadn't flagged it beforehand. On Sunday morning the bananas were there for me. Another 11/10 Vittorias - this looked great but both venues were fully booked! We are looking forward to our next visit! I'll put this on the supp board, Lyn Vee

Visited here after attending an Investiture at Holyrood Palace so wanted to do something special. I booked Afternoon Tea at Palm Court in advance so not sure what they can do if you don't give notice. Open sarnies (did not recognise the bread) warm from the oven fruit scones, shortbread, brownies, fruit bread, strawberry tartlets, biscuits and lots of tea. All GF and served seperate from the non-GF cake stands. A attentive service from the servers, harpist playing from a balcony, in all a worthwile place to go for a special occasion.

Cafe Fish, Edinburgh

GF board
Went to a fantastic new restaurant last night, Cafe Fish (http://www.cafefish.net/)
60 Henderson Street Edinburgh EH6 6DE 0131 538 6131
Most of the menu is fish, but they also have a couple of meat/ veggie options.
Not cheap (£19 2 courses, £23 3 courses for dinner) but fantastic food.
I went in beforehand and spoke to the chef who was just amazingly clued up and happy to change any dishes so that there was something I liked. Worth calling a couple of days in advance to give them notice. I was able to have a few things off the normal menu (dessert, potatoes that were GF...)
It's just off the Shore down in Leith. If you like fish, it's definitely worth heading down that way. Definitely the most obliging service I've had since being GF.

Eating out, Edinburgh We go to Dial Restaurant on George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, regularly (going there tomorrow night actually) They know me well by now and Murphy, the chef, is very accommodating. A lot of the things on the menu are actually GF anyway, and if at all possible Murphy will adapt if necessary. Tell them you are Coeliac and that you know Lesley! They now feel quite proud of being abole to cope with Coeliacs. Also somewhere I've been several times recently is a French restaurant called La Garrigue on Jeffrey St. Staff are French and their comprehension is mixed, but a very good GF meal is possible (eventually). Also, Henderson's on Hanover St (self-service) - the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Scotland, I think - will go over the menu items in great detail with you and have print-outs to consult on all their dishes so they can check instantly if a dish is GF. They are happy to do this even at busy times. If you are just having coffee they sometimes have a GF tray-bake and they always have fresh fruit. Lesley M *************** I went out for lunch with friends today - I have often mentioned Henderson's, the vegetarian restaurant in Edinburgh so we alwys go there. Henderson's staff have always been very good at pointing out GF items, even checking a list for me, but now they even mark the GF hot dishes on the menu board. 3 of the 6 hot dishes were GF and most of the salads are, too. And the service was ok, they understood my Welsh accent! Thanks. ************************************************* Good place to eat in Edinburgh Posted by davidmc on 24/5/2005 GF board Am just back from Edinburgh where I found a really nice place to eat. The restaurant is called Brown's and is in George's Street (parallel to and behind the shopping side of Princes St). It is a really big, airy, casual restaurant(no dressing up required and generally yuppie and sloane ranger free) and the staff advised me well on keeping GF. The gravies and sauces are reductions not thickened (they told me tho I didn't get one with my order). The food was reasonably priced(£10-12 a head for a main course), was well cooked and the service was very fast and friendly. There were no suitable desserts though and they advised me not to eat the ice cream so they must have some idea about our diet. While in town I had coffee earlier in John Lewis, in the food hall with the great view. I was able to get one or two GF cakes. The one I ate, Miss Moneypenny's truffle cake(made by a firm called Honeybuns) was delicious. A return visit is on the cards to both places. ************************************************* Edinburgh Posted by Sian northWales on 3/4/2006 Just before New Year we went got our second visit (not the same trip!) to a vegetarian restaurant which from memory is called David Bann?. The cooking is wonderful and the menu imaginative and regularly changed. No GF listed but staff will help advise you on what you can eat. The homemade vanilla ice cream is stunning. I was able to eat 3 great courses of perfectly prepared and seasoned GF food. Much of the menu is suitable for GF or can be adapted. This place is truly a hidden gem in Edinburgh's midst and with main courses at around £10 it is great value too. I have put it on the Gf map, assuming the submission works. If it could be added to the Supp Board that would be good too. Try this place if you are in town -you will be impressed. Casual clothing is fine as it is very relaxed. ****************************** Another Edinburgh GF caterer Posted by davidmc on 3/7/2007 GF board See the link. Food by this company Faking it in Edinburgh seems to be freshly prepared which is good. Link: www.fakingitinedinburgh.co.uk/pa ... meset.html ***** The hot dishes are designed to be slipped into the oven or microwave at the right time, filling your house with the smell of home cooking. Some of the canapes and desserts require some last minute attention to ensure they look and taste their best, but it's nothing a five year old couldn't do. Every meal comes with a cheat sheet to guide you through so you can pour yourself another gin and tonic and relax! Special diets There is a selection of dishes and treats suitable for everyone including vegetarians and those with food intolerances: The thought of catering for a coeliac may fill you with panic, but don't worry: there's plenty of choice. There is even a tempting selection of gluten-free and dairy-free goodies in the home baking and puddings sections. *****************************

Good Edinburgh GF experience Posted by davidmc on 18/7/2006
GF board
I have just spent a week in Edinburgh and ate out every day. For those who are interested in the places I ate this is the list below:- Vittorias (italian) - very nice food and stock GF pasta - ice cream dessert is GF (luca's ice cream) but remind them to not give you a wafer as I got one. Price - 3 courses for four - £68 incl drinks. Daniel's Bistro Commercial Road Leith - no problems -had lunch -2 courses - £41 for four incl drinks Valvona and Crolla Caffe bar -Elm Row just off Leith Walk -part of the famous italian deli -lunches and afternoons only - very helpful re GF - usually have Gf pasta but not on my visit - superb ingredients imported direct from Milan. £18 per head incl drinks. North Bridge brasserie - North bridge - part of 5* Scotsman Hotel - on the dear side at £50 per head for three courses but the food is lovely -that was a special occasion menu and it is not always that dear. Smoke Stack -Broughton St - just walked in without notice - nice menu -had chicken in a tarragon cream sauce -lovely - staff checked with chef who advised me what I could eat. Dessert Luca's ice cream again! £20 ph incl drinks The Basement -Broughton St - no notice again and just arrived without booking or checking Gf status beforehand -very busy bistro and best to book - this place was a treat and cost only £12 per head for 2 couses incl drinks -I recommend the cheesy nachos woth jalapeno peppers, sour cream and salsa - for two get one big plate between you as the portion is enormous -also the chilli con carne. There are other things that you can eat. Two of my family ordered fajitas and I reckon that they might be okay if you just ask for the fajitas to be left out. The fillings looked fantastic on their own dish. Just ask to be sure they are GF. John Lewis -St James Centre -top floor cafe - lots of GF traybakes here by Honeybuns - caramel shortcake was great. I also ate a fried breakfast here but just had bacon, fried egg and mushrooms. Hash browns were in same dish as potato bread The bacon and sausages are fried separately but they only have colour coded servers for meat and the other items. I asked the waitress to wash one and took the bacon. I survived happy to say. A couple of small adjustments in their system would make it safer for us. I may email them to suggest this. Just for the record most of the places I ate in are to the east end of the centre as I was staying in that area. I was impressed with Edinburgh and reckon that it would be easy to eat GF in loads of the restaurants. It is a good city to try out new options. Last but not least I came across another place apart from Mammas offering GF pizza, this time log fired and lots of them too- La Favorita in Leith Walk. Was too full to try them but they looked good. It is part of the Vittorias, Valvona and Crolla group mentioned above.

Mama's is FANTASTIC! We were staying with a friend last year and had take away for the first time in AGES! You order from their website and simply choose gluten free. Half hour the chap turns up on his moped with a GF Pizza! :-)
Apparently the owners Mum developed CD and so he thought he would cater for coeliacs!
If you eat in the restaurant they do GF beer too!
And being in Grassmarket, there are loads of great pubs around there too!

Edinburgh cafes for GF Posted by davidmc on 1/11/2009 GF board Just a quick mention about two cafes that provide GF goodies. Both are in Brandon Street in the New Town. This is the continuation at the bottom of Dundas Street. There is Circle Cafe and Bakery, a busy place for coffee and they have some homemade Gf gateaux on offer. The other is Coffee Angel a few yards away and they do GF Montezumas choc bars and Wooden Spoon pear GF choc biscuits. Both worth a visit and close to the Botanical gardens too if you are visiting. ************* Edinburgh restaurant recommendation "Iris" Thistle Street Posted by davidmc on 21/2/2010 GF board As usual on my recent trip to Edinburgh it was time to try somewhere new for gluten free. This time it was "Iris" at 47 Thistle Street, nice and central. The food was really very good and they catered well for my dietary needs. Much of the menu was suited to us. I had a lovely meal all round and my fellow diners felt the same. Cost? About £30 per head for 3 courses for 5 including a couple of glasses of red and two bottles of good wine. Nice low lit atmosphere in a charmingly olde worlde Edinburgh street. ************** I ris Thistle St EdinburghPosted by davidmc on 2/11/2011, 19:43:01 62.190.233.x A return visit to this lovely little central restaurant did not disappoint. Much of the menu does not use any flour and the food is very good. On booking I asked about a GF dessert and they offered to have the chef make me one specially. It turned out to be a GF chocolate mousse with cream and raspberries. It was delicious and my fellow diners looked at it enviously. My main of roast duck breast with drambuie and raspberries, minted potatoes and assorted veg was the same. I was tempted by the great looking lemon and black pepper rib eye steak with garlic fries. The menu makes good sense for lunch at good prices for great food. I usually stick to quite plain food like grilled salmon or steak, but the waiter assured me that the spicy lamb was gluten free, and it was the most delicious curry, followed by raspberry plate, a selection of three raspberry desserts which also were beautiful. Most of their ingredients are locally sourced and you can contact them on www.thesuninnedinburgh.co.uk as booking is usually necessary. I will definately be going again. ***********************

"Blue" at the Traverse Theatre Cambridge St - lovely quality food and menu almost all naturally GF. Ask and staff will advise you. Not expensive. Montpelliers - Bruntsfield Place - made me a wonderful bacon and mushroom three egg omelette but there are probably other dishes. They have had requests by coeliacs before. Good value La Favorita - Leith Walk - part of Valvona and Crolla group - you can get GF stonebaked pizza and other dishes. ********************** gluten free italian in Edinburgh Posted by lolly on 12/8/2007 GF board Having picked my 7 year old up from Easter Road on saturday (for all those who know edinburgh) …..I drove up Leith Walk, whilst stuck in traffic noticed a sign in a restaurant window saying gluten free pasta and pizza available there. Never seen that before so was well pleased. We are hoping to take the kids down (when the festival is over) as they have just started to eat pasta at last. www.la-favorita.com is the web site. Posted by davidmc on 12/8/2007 I tried this place on a recent visit and they seem to know what they are doing re GF. I checked that they cut my pizza with a separate cutter and they did. I bought a takeaway stonebaked pizza and it was very nice, maybe not just as good as Mama's in Grassmarket. I had no ill effects. I reheated some of it next day and the texture was a bit odd and it seemed to come apart like soggy bread, so not the best thing to do. The restaurant is part of the Valvona and Crolla empire and includes the V&C main place on Elm Row and Vittorias. La Favorita seems to get pretty busy at weekends so booking then is advisable. I saw people turned away on a sat evening without a booking. ***************** RISOTTI Risotto Verde in Forma con salsa Zafferano, Gamberoni e Punte di Asparagi (GF) Arborio rice, asparagus tips, shallots, chives, king prawns, saffron, vegetable stock, parsley and extra virgin olive oil £11.95 Risotto ai Carciofi con Rotolini di Sogliola (GF) Arborio rice cooked with artichokes and medallions of lemon sole, white wine, almonds, parmesan, mint and thyme £11.50 Risotto Giallo con Alette di Pollo (GF) Arborio rice cooked in chicken stock with celery, saffron, shallots and extra virgin olive oil. Served with chicken wings £10.95 ******************

Always Sunday Royal Mile Edinburgh I forgot about this little gem right on the Royal mile just down from the castle. The food is wonderful and very healthy and lots of veggie options. There was no problem getting GF food including main courses and cake. It is well worth a visit and not to be missed -most of the places in the immediate area are the usual chain fare but this is privately owned and run well, with attention to detail.

Edinburgh trip - the good and the bad Posted by davidmc on 4/11/2007 GF board Am just back from Scotland and survived trying several new places where I have not eaten before. Sygn, a small bar / restaurant in Charlotte Lane at the west end of Princes St, just off Charlotte Square, provided GF food which was enjoyable. La Tasca at 9 South Charlotte St provided the usual GF selection. I also ate GF fish and chips at the chip shop in Pitlochry on West Moulin Road and it was a treat. They also do GF pizza and lemon chicken - friendly people - the staff are very helpful. The House of Bruar, the huge scottish store north of Pitlochry on the A9 offered plenty of main meal items for coeliacs, none specifically called GF. There was simply a good choice of cooked meats, fish and salads etc as well as one of the lovely soups, lentil I think. No sign of any sweet stuff in the shop for us. It is coeliac hell with cakes everywhere. Now the bad news - I had previously recommended Edinburgh John Lewis for a cooked breakfast. DONT go near it now. The top floor cafe has been refurbished and the serving staff use the same tongs for sausages and bacon. They also use the bacon and sausages to make filled rolls. Every time they add the food to a roll the food and the serving tongs become contaminated. I had to have a Honeybuns traybake for breakfast. You could ask a chef to make you scrambled eggs but I was put off completely and won't bother again. Link: www.sygn.co.uk/new_menu/evening.pdf

.... ‘safe places’ to eat in Edinburgh, just spent 3 days in city and had a great time. La Tasca was fine as usual and at Browns Bar and Restaurant the staff were very knowledgeable about suitable choices. Vittoria an Italian restaurant had Gluten Free pasta available listed on the menu. ...

The Cellar Door 44-46 Goerge IV bridge - very good food from well informed staff. You can tell the chef what type of food you like and he will come up with a personalised menu for you or you can stick to the menu. The restaurant is down a lot of stairs so will only suit those who are able to manage several flights down and back up. that said the restaurant is accessed from GeorgeIV Bridge but it may have an an access at the lower level if you ask as the windows appeared to open onto a street, presumably below thw bridge. www.thecellardooredinburgh.com/restaurant/index.html

Tex Mex Thistle Street Edinburgh can cater for coeliacs. Ask staff and chef about your options. They provide corn tortillas but ask them to make sure that the dish they come in has been cleaned in case it has been used first for regular gluten tortillas. I enjoyed my meal and the guacamole with tortilla chips was great. Central for those on Princes Street. Need to book as it is tiny

I haven't been recently but I have visited the very salubrious Centotre italian restaurant on George St twice to date. Not particularly expensive and getting Gf food was simple. Pleasant well cooked food too - Vittorias does it better but it is still very pleasant.

Tapa, Edinburgh Posted by CathGF on 11/9/2011, Hi, I ate at a newSpanish tapas restaurant in Edinburgh yesterday called Tapa, on Hanover Street. 5 minutes walk from Princes Street, nice and central. It was a set menu that had been made entirely GF, because there were a few GFers! I was a bit nervous, eating somewhere new and trusting they had done everything right, but I've been fine so giving it a thumbs up! The food was amazing, really tasty. I don't know what they do differently, but the Spanish omelette was better than any other I have tasted! As it was a set meal I didn't see a proper menu or actually deal with booking or speaking to the chef or anything, so check it out in advance for now but worth a look! Music (guitarist) was a little loud... www.tapaedinburgh.co.uk/

Origano - GF pizza in Leith, Edinburgh Posted by Pam (Scottish Borders) on 1/10/2011, 20:41:41 A new Italian restaurant at 277 Leith Walk. They will do GF pizza but need prior warning so worth calling the day before you plan to visit. I am not a great pizza fan; the crust has to be very thin with loads of topping. Loved the GF pizza from Origano! www.facebook.com/pages/Origano/104503119652265
