Iris Thistle St Edinburgh Posted by davidmc on 2/11/2011, 19:43:01 62.190.233.x A return visit to this lovely little central restaurant did not disappoint. Much of the menu does not use any flour and the food is very good. On booking I asked about a GF dessert and they offered to have the chef make me one specially. It turned out to be a GF chocolate mousse with cream and raspberries. It was delicious and my fellow diners looked at it enviously. My main of roast duck breast with drambuie and raspberries, minted potatoes and assorted veg was the same. I was tempted by the great looking lemon and black pepper rib eye steak with garlic fries. The menu makes good sense for lunch at good prices for great food. Dinner is relaxed and atmospheric and the high standard has been maintained. www.irisedinburgh.co.uk/samplemenu.html

I had a lovely meal at Loch Fine -Newhaven branch- with salmon platter as a starter (no bread or soy sauce) followed by chicken Thai Green Curry. I was tempted to have poached haddock on colcannon which is also GF.
I had a less positive experience at Henderson's veggie cafe...certainly several items on the menu clearly marked as GF, including items served with GF oatcakes, but not all available. The soup was not marked GF on the menu and neither the waiter or the chef knew if it was GF. i appreciate that this is because soup of the day may vary. The staff were overworked and doing their best but we wouldn't go again...in part due to the trek downstairs to horrid toilets.
